Tryout & Registration FAQ

Is advance registration required?
We strongly encourage all athletes to register online before attending tryouts. Walk-ins will be accepted, but a parent or guardian must complete the full registration process at the facility before the athlete may participate.
Should athletes attend both tryouts?
Attending both tryouts is not required. When possible, athletes should attend the first tryout on Saturday, August 15. The August 22 tryout is available as an additional evaluation opportunity and as a makeup tryout for athletes who are unable to attend the first weekend.
What grade determines eligibility?
Grade levels are based on the athlete's grade during the 2026–2027 school year.
What happens after tryouts?
Families should expect to receive a team invitation or other placement information within approximately two to three days after each tryout. Invitations may include a deadline for accepting the offered roster spot and completing the first program payment.
What are coaches evaluating?
Coaches will evaluate each athlete's basketball skills, decision-making, effort, competitiveness, communication, coachability, teamwork, and attitude. Evaluations may include individual drills, team concepts, competitive exercises, and live basketball.
Is every athlete guaranteed a roster spot?
No. Registering for or participating in tryouts does not guarantee placement on a team. Players who are not selected may be invited to continue participating in Westlake Hoops Skills Classes, developmental programs, Open Gym sessions, or future evaluations. We strongly encourage athletes who are not selected for a Fall 2026 team to continue training with Westlake Hoops — winter team tryouts are expected to be held in October for the winter season, which will run approximately from November through early February.
What does the Fall 2026 program cost?

Final season pricing available with team roster invitations.

Applicable taxes and processing fees will be added.

The program fee includes coaching, team practices, tournament and game participation, a team uniform, and full access to Westlake Hoops Skills Classes and Open Gym sessions from roster acceptance through the end of October. Skills Classes and Open Gym are optional and offered in addition to regular team practices, giving athletes extra opportunities to improve individual skills and gain live reps outside of team practices.

Can athletes participate in other sports?
Yes. Westlake Hoops encourages multi-sport athletes. We ask that athletes and parents communicate openly with coaches about other sports, school activities, travel, and scheduling commitments. Early communication helps us balance team rosters, practices, tournaments, playing opportunities, and overall expectations.
What should parents expect during tryouts?
Parents may remain in the gym during tryouts and should sit in the designated spectator area. To provide the best evaluation environment for all athletes, parents should not coach, instruct, or communicate with athletes from the sidelines during the tryout. Coaches will lead all drills, instruction, and evaluations. A brief parent and athlete conversation will take place following each tryout session to discuss the program, season expectations, scheduling, and next steps.
Are waivers and medical information required?

Yes. Registration will include a participation agreement, a medical release, emergency contact information, and a liability waiver.

All required registration forms must be completed by a parent or legal guardian before an athlete may participate.

Before Tryouts

Attend a Skills Class before tryouts

We would love to see athletes interested in joining a Westlake Hoops team attend one or more Skills Classes during the summer or leading into the fall season.

Skills Classes allow athletes to become familiar with our coaches, training environment, and expectations. They also give our coaching staff additional opportunities to evaluate each athlete's skill level, work ethic, attitude, coachability, and performance in live basketball situations.
